'(9 Mar 1998) English/Nat  The ten-day pret-a-porter shows in Paris kicked-off on Monday morning with the first ever clothing line from the luxury travel goods manufacturer Louis Vuitton.  And fashion critics were keen to judge the performance of Vuitton designer - New Yorker Marc Jacobs.   The American paraded a classic collection based around white, greys and blacks, in keeping with Vuitton\'s smart and traditional image.   The luxury luggage maker, Vuitton, unveiled its first ever ready to wear fashion collection in Paris on Monday.  And with the label\'s plunge into clothing all critics\' eyes were on the collection created by New York designer Marc Jacobs.  The look was simple and classic with most of the clothes based around white, greys and blacks.  Skirts were long and shapeless and the models wore no make up or accessories  Among the guests present were French actress Beatrice Dalle, star of the film Betty Blue, and English designer Alexander McQueen.  Also on view was the winter collection from young French designer Jean-Luc Amsler, which was inspired by vampires.  There is some resistance in France to a spate of new designers from abroad including Vuitton designer Marc Jacobs.  He\'s the fourth American to take the top job at a big French fashion house.  Already at the design helm in Paris are Oscar de la Renta at Balmain, Michael Kors at Celine and Narciso Rodriguez at Loewe.  Back stage after the show, Jacobs was modest about his collection.
