'(19 Jan 1994) Yves Saint Laurent produced an elegant pageant of timeless fashions for troubled times on Wednesday (19/1), the last day of a mediocre haute couture season. At a time when Paris fashion houses, sparring with a crisis-ridden economy, are confused about what their shrinking clientele will buy, the stalwart classics are still the sturdiest survivors. Saint Laurent\'s trouser suits and sleek evening gowns were the kind of sophisticated couture that is right, whether the era dictates dressing down or drop-dead seduction. His creations for daytime were conservative but fresh, like the ivory tweed ensemble worn with a sheer white polka-dot blouse and a crepe periwinkle dress with a sashed waist. Skirt suits of creamy damask or apricot satin made refined cocktail wear and a jacket of soft ostrich feathers over a sheer peach bare-backed sheath was the kind of delicate and feminine evening wear in which women will be taking refuge this summer. Rippling leopard-print chiffon, white lace bustier dresses and satin wrap gowns slit high up the thigh were graceful and easily worn.
