Various of top model Laetitia Casta on stage with St Laurent at the end of fashion show CATWALK KING STEPS DOWN French fashion giant YVES SAINT LAURENT has announced his retirement from the world of haute couture, after decades of ground-breaking achievements including popularising trouser-suits for women and the daring see-through blouse. Saint Laurent, 65, gave a news conference at his Paris salon today (Monday), where he said he is closing the haute couture fashion house he started 40 years ago. He did not give an exact reason, although he said he had been battling ill health and depression for years. Saint Laurent read a prepared statement and left immediately afterward without answering any questions. But his business partner, Pierre Berge, said he believed Saint Laurent had decided to retire because he was no longer comfortable with the direction that the fashion world had taken. \"It\'s not very fun to play a tennis match when you are all alone,\" Berge said. Saint Laurent said that throughout his career, his goal was \"not just to make women more beautiful but to reassure them and give them confidence.\" The French press has been speculating about his retirement since yesterday (Sunday). Le Monde newspaper said on Sunday that he will announce the end of his 44-year career as a fashion designer. \"On the eve of his 40th anniversary of his house of haute couture, Yves Saint Laurent, 65 years old, is preparing to announce his departure,\" said Le Monde. The paper called him \"something of a last magician, the ultimate pop star.\" Another newspaper, the weekly Le Journal du Dimanche, said on Sunday \"Tomorrow, at noon, a living legend will take his leave.\" Le Journal du Dimanche said Saint Laurent has been at odds with French businessman Francois Pinault of the retail powerhouse Pinault-Printemps-Redoute, who has controlled the rights to Saint Laurent\'s brand name since 1999.
