In a way, punk changed the face of fashion. It was highlighting the idea of creativity, highlighting the idea of individuality and also was very critical of the status quo. So it was both a political and an aesthetic movement.\" 6. Mid of punk outfits on mannequins 7. Close up of studded belt 8. SOUNDBITE (English) Andrew Bolton, Curator: \"It was a very depressed time economically, both in New York and London, in the mid-70s. And I don\'t think punk would have emerged, perhaps, if it wasn\'t for that political and economic climate. I think that creativity on that level often occurs as a reaction to a climate like that, where you\'re forced to in a way look into yourself for creativity and not to look outside yourself. And I think that perhaps contributed very much to the punk expression.\" 11. Punk outfits, tilt up 12. Close up of Vivienne Westwood plaque, tilt up 13. Various of Vivienne Westwood shirts 14. SOUNDBITE (English) Andrew Bolton, Curator: \"I think that, what I wanted to do, was to highlight particularly that, a moment in our history, in particular our fashion history, which was all about creativity, and all about heroism. I think punks were incredibly brave, heroic individuals who didn\'t really care what people thought about them. It was an anti-fashion statement and very much about anti-beauty. It challenged all these nominative conventions of beauty and what we mean by fashion. And I think that designers today, people like Rei Kawakubo and Margiela, have taken on the mantle of punk in that respect. But to me punk was always about individuality and self-expression.\" 15. Various of recreation of bathrooms at legendary punk music club, CBGB LEAD IN Punk - the anti establishment movement that exploded on to the music and fashion scene in the 1970s - is being celebrated at a new exhibition in New York. STORYLINE PUNK: Chaos to Couture - it\'s doubtful if the architects of the angry 70s rock movement would approve of this sedate exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Here punk fashion - with its ripped shirts, anti-establishment slogans and do-it-yourself accessories of safety pins and chains - stands frozen in time in the rarefied atmosphere of a New York cultural icon. The music of the time was loud, angry and anti-authoritarian and often ended in crowd violence at gigs during the height of its popularity between 1974 - 1976. The headline acts that provided the soundtrack of the movement included the Sex Pistols and the Clash from the UK and the Ramones in the US. Today , nearly forty years later, the curator of this exhibition, Andrew Bolton, says punk has heavily influenced haute couture down the decades: \"I think that more than any other sub-cultural movement, punk has impacted on fashion. And also on the cultural landscape in general. In a way, punk changed the face of fashion. It was highlighting the idea of creativity, highlighting the idea of individuality and also was very critical of the status quo. So it was both a political and an aesthetic movement.\" Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork Twitter: https://twitter.com/AP_Archive Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/APArchives Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/APNews/ You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/youtube/051c60fd504474257b26d0063e6869dc'
