'The relationship between nineteenth-century African Americans and dress and fashion is a complex one. The birth of photography, first with the daguerreotype and later with ambrotypes, tintypes and subsequent photographic paper formats, provides an essential research component in examining this history. In this talk Karin J. Bohleke for looks at this important aspect of fashion history in Maine through images from the collections of MHS and beyond.'
