It was one of the biggest international fashion events combining haute couture with a social cause. Dominican designer Oscar de la Renta chose to launch his Spring 1997 collection Thursday night \"back home\" in the Dominican Republic. Big names from the fashion industry and local and international political figures converged on the capital, Santo Domingo to see de la Renta\'s latest look. The show at the capital\'s Hotel Jaragua Renaissance, was entitled \"An Oscar for Children.\" All proceeds will go to children\'s charities such as the Association of Duty Free Children\'s Centre and La Romana Children\'s Home. De la Renta has always been committed to children\'s causes. The designer is the founder of La Romana Children\'s Homes in the resort city and in Santiago. And he himself has adopted several orphans. His 1997 Spring collection was as varied as it was elegant. He combined trousers with long jackets and Nehru collars. Soft pastel colours were the rule- with white, blue, purple, green and orange overtaking the catwalk. Body-hugging dresses were paraded along loose fitting garments. The event wouldn\'t have been incomplete without de la Renta\'s famous formal wear. Evening gowns were simple and elegant - prefect for the upcoming Christmas season. The traditional black dress was among the winners in the evening gown department. For de la Renta the Spring collection was inspired by today\'s modern woman. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) \"This is a collection like all my collections - super-feminine, romantic... a collection whose inspiration is the modern woman, the woman of today, the professional woman, the working woman, because she is the woman that is today\'s most important consumer - the one who buys and spends most.\" SUPER CAPTION: Oscar de la Renta, Designer Sixteen international and five Dominican models paraded de la Renta\'s latest designs to Latin rhythms and the harmonious voice of Spanish singer Julio Iglesias.
